On the first day of Christmas I want to share with you
A glimpse at a story that is true
This little poem started my journey into retelling my family's favorite stories in whimsical verse...eleven more will follow before Christmas Day...ENJOY!
Introducing Charming Holly Chrystal was my inaugural book. It is a simple story about how my mind worked as a little kid. "Charming Holly Chrystal" was literally my nickname. Adults were often amazed at my ability to chat up anyone, anywhere, anytime...when you're an adult, that ability makes you a "social butterfly"...but I am just a well-mannered lady who loves a great conversation. I hope to influence young women to stop living in lounge wear and using profanity indiscriminately....
On this first day of Christmas, I thought I would share one of the illustrations in the book that launched a year ago and the little rhyme that started it all! A bit of a rhyming family history will follow...I plan an entire book of nursery rhymes!
Holly Chrystal talks a lot…that’s why they call her Charming
She can talk to anyone…some find it quite alarming
She goes to church and should not talk, but sometimes she gets excited
She has so many questions and sometimes she cannot hide it
At school, she is reminded to be quiet so others can hear
But the teacher calls on her, when no hands in the air appear
When no one wants to read aloud, she can count on Holly Chrystal
And when her classmates need a laugh, they say she’s quite the pistol
She doesn’t know what that means, exactly, I guess it means she’s funny
They call her Charming, after all, her disposition must be sunny
But being quiet is not easy, there is so much to say
And Holly Chrystal loves to talk, with words she has “a way”
She’s not quite sure what that means either, just that she “turns a phrase”
People always point out her speaking, and she does not always
Know if it’s a good or bad thing that she could talk to a brick wall?
She knows very well brick walls just do not speak at all
But she’s decided, Holly Chrystal, to continue to use her words
She knows she has a lot to say, she just doesn't know if she’s heard
One day, when she’s big enough, she will speak before a crowd
And they will cheer for her wise words, stand up and clap really loud
She loves to dream about that day when she has an important message
She’ll paint her nails, put makeup on, and wear lots of pretty dresses
Maybe she will be a poet…an actress…musician or teacher
No matter what her occupation, love of language will be a feature
Holly Chrystal talks a lot…that’s why some call her Charming
Until next time, friends, use your words, folks find it most disarming
